Our Story

Doc’s Ice Cream & Coffee is named in honor of Dr. Joseph J. Richert who served the families of Huron Township for more than 45 years. Doc always knew the best spots to get ice cream and in his final years there was at last one that topped his list, Doc’s Ice Cream & Coffee. The Richert Family opened our flagship ice cream parlor in New Boston, Michigan, just steps away from Doc’s original office where he ran his practice for more than 45 years. After renovating the historic building at 37337 Huron River Drive, Doc’s Ice Cream & Coffee continues the tradition of serving ice cream from that same location for more than 35 years.

”Doc’s was something that Dad was honestly quite proud of,” shares son Joe Richert. “He was happy to see it happen for the community where he and my mom (Jean Richert), raised us and made their home and where many of us still work and live.”

Doc’s offers sixteen rotating flavors of Guernsey Farms Dairy premium ice cream including scoops, shakes and sundaes. We make our very own waffle cones daily in-house, and anyone who’s visited knows they’re especially tasty when you order one up “doctored” (coated in sprinkles or nuts). We proudly brew New Order Coffee Roasters small batch coffee, espresso and specialty coffee and offer premium sipping chocolate, tea, hand-crafted marshmallows, and assorted locally-made sweets from area bakeries.

Although he retired his practice years ago, Doc gladly came out to serve the first scoop when we opened in New Boston in February 2021, and enjoyed stopping by for a scoop or a cup o’ joe any chance he could. Anyone who knew Doc knew his healthy approach to life, which always included time for family, community, and of course a good dose of ice cream. When all of these things can be combined, well that’s about as good as it gets and that’s the feeling we strive for in our store. We want you, your friends, and family to take a break, relax, and enjoy some of the finest ice cream and coffee the area has to offer. With seating inside and outdoors, there’s plenty of space for you to unwind and make yourself at home.
